Nick's bio in his own words: Most of the time, professional athletes have problems adjusting from the limelight to the twilight, when they retire. I believe that I would have fallen into this same trap if the great opportunity as hockey analyst at Sportsnet hadn't come along.
For 25 straight years, I dedicated myself to playing the game -- from minor hockey to the OHL, AHL, and NHL. I have many great memories from my time as a professional. During my eight NHL seasons, I played in 442 games for the Washington Capitals, the Hartford Whalers, the New York Rangers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Without a doubt, the highlight for me was holding the Stanley Cup above my head in victory as a Ranger in 1994.
So, when Sportsnet offered me this chance to stay involved with the NHL, it was definitely too good to pass up. Part of what made it such an easy transition for me was working with great people. In the NHL, I was very fortunate to have played with some great teammates including Dale Hunter, Mark Messier, and Mats Sundin. However, let me tell you, that as far as teammates go, Daren Millard can certainly hold his own.
A teammate of mine once mentioned that I could "talk a pit bull off a meat wagon." I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or not, but what I am sure of is that I can't get enough of talking hockey. I guess that's how one ends up as an analyst.
Daren's bio in his own words: Born in Brandon Manitoba, my lifelong dream is to play in the NHL. (I'm still waiting for the phone to ring. If anyone has any ideas on how to get the attention of NHL General Managers, they can e-mail me.) For now I settle with the Wednesday skates with Nick Kypreos and Darren Dreger.
The career started in Radio, with stops in Melfort, SK, Portage la Prairie, MB, Yorkton, SK, and Brandon, MB, I moved on to TV with stays at Global Winnipeg and at ITV Edmonton on "Sports Night" -- not the cancelled sitcom Sports Night, but the program where they actually show the highlights. I like to watch the sitcom, though. It makes me wonder if I am really that funny off the air.
I basically eat, drink, and play sports -- especially golf. I may just be the best sand player to ever carry a 23 handicap. My ultimate golf dream is to caddy in a professional tournament, but I don't want to set my goals too high. I lug a bag around the local muni for a $5 dollar tip.
I did, in fact, graduate from high school. I mention graduating because most people don't believe me. I think it has something to do with my spelling skills. After all, I am willing to go on record saying that spell check may be the best invention ever, above rockets to the moon and Velcro.
