Ryan Clowe scored the game-winning goal with 6:39 to go in the third period. Phil Kessel tallied a goal and an assist in a losing cause.
Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey is resigning as the club's general manager after five seasons at the helm. Gainey will stay on as a consultant to new Habs GM and executive vice-president Pierre Gauthier. The team is currently in sixth place in the East, with a record of 28-26-6 despite a series of crippling long-term injuries to key players.
Washington Capitals sniper Alex Ovechkin has once again been named the NHL's first star of the week.
It's the third time he's received the honour this season and the second time in four weeks. Toronto's newly acquired goalie, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, was named second star.
